How to obtain an NIE or residencia in Spain

New regulations state that, as of January 2007, NIE certificates must be obtained in person from a local police station and the original must be presented at notary upon completion of a property purchase. Buyers who have lost their original certificate must obtain a new original from the police station. You must take your original passport as well as a copy to the police station, where you will complete a form and the NIE certificate will arrive within a few days depending on where you are in Spain.

As of March 2007, the Spanish residencia card has been abolished for European Union nationals and has been replaced by a residency certificate obtainable in 1-2 days from the police station.
